Taken from the Friday Field Notes at SES:
SES Juniors had a wonderful time on the overnight trip to Baker Park this week! We added to our understanding of animal adaptations to winter on a 3-hour hike with naturalists from the Three Rivers Park District that included a visit to a chickadee landing, identifying tracks and furs, and playing games. We also collected data on the deer population through a deer browse survey. After the hike, students built bonfires to cook everything from chili to s’mores, to steak and broccoli stir fry - served on floral pattern china with sparkling grape juice in crystal goblets! And after, they even washed their dishes with water they had heated over their fires.
Our evening class in the lodge involved journal writing and some lively poetry performances, then students opted for a night hike or games in the lodge. They came back to school smelling like wood smoke and with big smiles on their faces from the new connections made. Thanks for your support in helping students prepare for this trip!
